The University Duisburg-Essen is one of the youngest universities in Germany (founded in 2003) and was generated by the merger of the former universities of Duisburg and Essen. With close to 40.000 students among all disciplines from engineering, education, and medicine up to nano sciences, the university is the 10th largest university in Germany.

Transport

The region has excellent national and international public transport connections. This applies in particular to the integration into the European high-speed rail network in Germany and France as well as with four international airports all parts of the world. The closest airport Düsseldorf is the 3rd largest in Germany and within minutes to reach from Duisburg main station.

Local transportation in Duisburg and the surrounding regions have many options. Here's a guide to help you navigate the ticketing system, including recommendations based on your travel plans.

1. Ticket Purchase

To buy tickets online, you can use the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) official platforms:

  • VRR Ticket Shop: Purchase various tickets directly from the VRR Ticket Shop:
    - Online
    - In person: Duisburg
  • VRR App: Download the VRR app on your smartphone to buy digital tickets, plan routes, and receive real-time
    - Updates
    - The App itself offers trip plan and access to tickets, the App itself is free of charge.
  • Trip-wise tickets: eezy NRW: with example prices:
    - Bus: Duisburg Central Station - University of Duisburg-Essen (Uni Nord station): 2 km, 2.31 €
    - Tram: Duisburg Central Station - University of Duisburg-Essen (Uni/Zoo station): 3 km, 2.60 €
    - Train: Düsseldorf airport - University of Duisburg-Essen (Uni Nord station): 17 km, 6.66 €
    - Train: Düsseldorf airport - University of Duisburg-Essen (Uni/Zoo station): 18 km, 6.95 €

2. Ticket Options

Depending on your travel needs, consider the following non trip wise ticket types

  • Deutschlandticket: Ideal for more travel (more trips a day, more days, larger region), this ticket offers unlimited use of local and regional public transportation across Germany (58 €/month). It's particularly cost-effective if you're commuting between Duisburg and Düsseldorf Airport, traveling from your hotel to the university, and/or exploring cities like Cologne, Aachen, and the Ruhr area.
  • Day Ticket: Suitable for unlimited travel within a single day in the VRR network. Suitable if you plan multiple trips in one day without the need for a monthly commitment.

3. Deutschlandticket: Important Information

  • If purchased via VRR, you do not need a German bank account. You can pay with an international credit card, everything is online.
  • No identification is required when buying the ticket through VRR.
  • Cancellation: If you only need the Deutschlandticket for one month (your usual case), cancel it immediately after purchasing to avoid automatic renewal (it renews automatically if not canceled before the 10th of the month).
  • Recommendation: Buy the ticket via VRR for an easier process.

4. Additional Resources
