TPC Welcome
Welcome to the Fifteenth IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (PerCom 2017)! PerCom has been held in varying locations throughout the world; for 2017, we head back to Hawai'i, but this time to the Big Island. Over the years, PerCom has established itself as the premier annual scholarly event in pervasive computing and communications. At the conference, attendees from academia and industry will present original research results, experiments, and development experiences. Panel and ad hoc discussions from the conference also spark new research directions and efforts.
PerCom is a true international forum; over its fifteen year lifetime, it has been held in seven different countries across four continents. The participation in this year's conference also reflects this global reach: the program committee members come from 18 different countries, and submissions were received from authors in 37 different countries.
On that note, PerCom 2017 received a total of 194 full papers. All of these papers went through a rigorous two-phase review process. Every paper was reviewed by at least three members of the technical program committee (TPC) in the first round. Many papers remained under consideration after this first round of reviewing and received one or two additional reviews in a second round. During and after the second round of reviews, the TPC held a lively on-line discussion of the submitted papers. Finally, the TPC held an in-person meeting in Pisa, Italy, at which papers were discussed in even more detail to identify those to be included in the program. In the end 28 full-length papers and 4 concise papers were selected to appear in the proceedings and will be presented at the conference in Hawai'i. This represents an overall acceptance rate of 16.5%.
The PerCom technical program includes nine technical paper sessions, two keynote talks, and a panel discussion. One of the technical paper sessions includes three talks for papers nominated for the Mark Weiser Best Paper Award, which will be awarded after the presentation, at the conference banquet. A set of workshops, demonstrations, and posters relating work in progress round out the technical program.
Putting together the technical program for PerCom is an enormous effort whose success relies on the contributions of many many people. We thank first and foremost the members of the technical program committee, whose attention to the review process ensures a solid program and a fair evaluation of all of the submitted papers. We were genuinely impressed by the performance of the TPC during the entire review process, including the detailed and collegial technical discussions at the in-person TPC meeting. For the first time this year, we asked the TPC members to perform "peer ratings" of the reviews performed by their fellow TPC members. TPC members with significantly high ratings by their peers are explicitly acknowledged in the list of TPC members; outstanding reviewers will be recognized at the conference.
Finally, we also thank the entire PerCom community for supporting the conference, whether by submitting papers or attending the conference. We hope you enjoy PerCom 2017 and that you find inspiration in the work of your colleagues. Enjoy the sun (and attend a session or two)!
