T1: Tutorial 1 - Power Quality in Distribution Grids

Bojan Grabovac & Peter Cooney
Room: Library Bldg – Library Lecture Hall – LIB72

With the modernization of various types of facilities, customers of electricity are operating more and more sensitive equipment. Traditionally, these operations were mostly impacted by complete outages or interruptions of power. Today, a deviation from the nominal voltage can lead to similar impacts as a full interruption. This discussion will encapsulate the common causes of these issues on the grid, mitigation strategies on the grid side, typical impacts on the customers and potential ways to mitigate the issues. Identifying the root cause of these interruptions can also be challenging and the discussion will touch on a way to leverage machine learning to help with identifying the root causes of issues. We will also go through examples/criteria of the sizing of mitigation equipment and some limitations of the approaches.

T3: Tutorial 3 - Planning Aspects of Asset Management for Electrical Utilities

Bob Singh, David Curtis
Room: Library Bldg – Library Lecture Hall – LIB72

Starting with the asset management framework, the participants will learn different elements of asset-centred corporate risk formulation and how these are developed and cascaded into the creation of utilities' capital and maintenance investments taking a risk-based investment approach. Finally, participants will discuss and understand how these diverse investments can be optimized through difficult trade-offs in order to minimize corporate risk in the face of challenging constraints be they financial, safety, environmental, or any other. Easily applied to a utility of any size, the approach and principles discussed compel asset managers to take action when warranted and to defend their actions with facts and figures.

Speakers: Birendra (Bob) N. Singh a former IESO Distinguished Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE) at Ryerson University, Toronto has thirty-five years of diversified experience including asset management, long/short-term system planning, corporate strategy/policy, etc. in the transmission and distribution (T&D) areas of the electrical utility business. He held positions at Hydro One Networks, Toronto Hydro, former North York Hydro and Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro.
