Design of an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Data Logger with Xbee

This paper presents an embedded automatic meter reading prototype system using Arduino and wireless communication based on an IEEE 802.15.4/Zigbee standard. It monitors and records all power usage per watt in the user's house. The network consists of a data gateway or coordinator connected to computer via COM port as receiver for the data from an End Device Xbee module) with microcontroller Arduino. The total usage in kilowatt per hour (kWh) is counted utilizing the LED light pulse of the standard digital electric meter or conventional electric meter. The measurement is counted as 1000 pulses = 1kWh. This system will simplify the billing process for monthly usages of the electricity through the data collection by the client computer by Zigbee technologies
