KEY1: Keynote 1 - Wireless Power Transfer: From Long-Distance Transmission to Short-Range Charginggo to top

Since Nikola Tesla proposed the Wardenclyfee Tower in 1889 for the wireless power transmission to date, it has been over a century. The idea was later picked up and implemented continuously in the last half a century. Recently in 2007, MIT research group picked up the old concept and implemented for potential applications into telecommunications. This talk will address briefly the state of-the-art research and development progresses in the wireless power transmission technology and also potential applications. The talk is categorized into two aspects, that is, (a) the long-distance and high-power wireless energy transmission and (b) the short-range and low-power wireless energy transmission. For the long-distance high-power transmission, the talk will cover atmospheric effects, high-power microwave generation, transmitting antennas, EMC/EMI effects on radio frequency wireless system, rectennas, and biological effects on human being and animals. For the short-range wireless power transmission, the review will touch inductive couple effects and their applications onto power-grid systems, wireless power charging systems, mine-tunnel power charge system, and medical applications. The talk will, of course, discuss on advantages and short-comings of these proposals.

The climate in a tropical zone is suitable for growing agricultural products. However, the competition is extremely high and the customers demand quality control. Conventional agricultural product inspections relied on human expertise which is not consistent. Therefore, it is desirable to develop apparatus for quality control. Microwave is a potential technology suitable for this application and some apparatus have been developed. This talk overviews the microwave technology for agricultural applications.

The promise of LTE Advanced as next generation of mobile broadband offers huge potential to service providers, application developers and wireless consumers. LTE Advanced focus on speed and capacity. For example for low mobility the data rate should be at 1Gbps for low mobility and 100Mbps for high mobility. The current 4G (LTE) is the leading wireless mobile broadband technology and offers high spectral efficiency, low latency and high peak data rates. To improve further the speed and spectral efficiency, LTE Advanced provide the features such as carrier aggregation, enhanced multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) and heterogeneous network. LTE Advanced has being selected by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as the technology for IMT Advanced for future mobile broadband. The presentation will cover the evolution from 3G (UMTS) towards 4G (LTE) and beyond 4G (LTE Advanced).

TT: Tutorial - Dielectric properties determination using free space techniquego to top

Dielectric material has unique dielectric properties that are important to many applications. A number of dielectric characterization techniques at microwave frequencies have been developed. The resonant method using the cavity perturbation technique is suited to low dielectric loss material. The accuracy is limited by the cavity size. For non-resonant method, the transmission line technique needs an adequate sample thickness to obtain an accurate result. An open-ended probe technique can measure over a wide frequency range with moderate accuracy needs a sufficiently thick material sample with the flat contact surface of the probe and there is not any air gap. The free space technique measures attenuation in amplitude and phase shift of the signal from a sample placed between a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna. This method is non-contacting and can be applied to materials under test with high temperature and hostile environments. This tutorial will review the dielectric characterization techniques and address the principle of the free space technique.

Towards Greener Smartphones with Microwave Measurements

Today's smartphone handsets offer a wide range of functions (phone, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, .) to customers, although are still perceived as expensive and energy consuming (requiring a daily recharge). The aim of this talk is to show how microwave measurements impact smartphone design. By optimally engineering the type of measurements made before and after design (linear, nonlinear, loadpull, modulation, .), the efficiency of the design process not only increases, but tougher specifications such as smaller form factor and lower energy consumption can be met more easily. This observation is especially valid in the design of green multi-mode wireless radios, due to the delicate balance between energy efficiency and linearity (that is, cross talk between channels).
